The UK is blessed with surfing beaches all around its coastline. The beaches are wide and stunning on the west coast of Wales and here you find beaches such as Broadhaven and Tenby. If you are a hardcore surfer, there are Scottish surfing beaches from Edinburgh to Coldingham with 40 known "breaks" in the area. But the serious surfers head for Cornwall on the south west tip of England.

The Atlantic Ocean provides the county with some of the best surfing conditions in the whole of Europe. Here you find the surf rolling onto golden beaches which are overlooked by beautiful cliffs and rugged coast paths. Cornwall is the mildest part of Britain. Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the peninsula rarely sees snow and ice.

On the south coast can be found the surfing beaches of Porthleven and Whitsand but it is the north coast that attracts the serious surfers. As top surfing destinations in the UK go, nowhere beats Newquay which is the jewel in the crown for surfers. Newquay is the home of the British Surfing Association. It has achieved renown because it has different beaches which face in all directions. This creates a good spread of types of surf for all abilities. The most well known of these is Fistral beach. Fistral can be divided into three parts: main Fistral, south Fistral and little Fistral. Main Fistral and south Fistral are joined and are similar having wide stretches of golden sand. Like all of Newquay`s beaches the tide goes out a long way.

Great Western Beach is a popular town beach, excellent for learning to surf with a good surf school based here. Tolcarne Beach is very popular with boogie boarders, especially at high tide where the waves break close to the shoreline.

Newquay is now regarded as the Surf Capital of the UK. It has developed its own unique culture with its bars and fashionable restaurants, as well as nearby first class attractions such as the Eden Project, The National Maritime Museum, and the Tate Gallery at St. Ives.

Every Saturday in summer there are fast, direct rail services to Newquay from London, Scotland, the North and the Midlands, supplemented by a regional service with connections from Par using Virgin Trains.

Car travel to Cornwall is simple and straightforward using the M4, M5 and M6 motorways. Within Cornwall, the two major inbound routes, the A38 and A30 are continually being improved, with dual carriageways as far as Bodmin. The easiest route is to join the M5 to Exeter. Then take either the A30 or A38 into Cornwall, depending on your final destination.

Newquay has its own airport which is well used as it is the largest commercial airport serving Cornwall. Newquay Airport offers a serious alternative to the long journey by road and rail. The airport offers flights from Gatwick, Stansted and several other national and international destinations.

Once in Newquay, you don’t need a lot of surf gear but you need some basic items. A wetsuit is optional as is surf wax and sun block. You might decide to splash out on boardbags, repair kits and a helmet. All of these can be purchased in Newquay at the excellent surf shops in the town.
